Hyperwave eKnowledge Portal: Integration of data, processes
and application in a single interface
February 10, 2000
The new Hyperwave eKnowledge Portal from Hyperwave AG, Munich,
is the first solution to meet all of the demands of an enterprise
information portal:
- Access to structured and unstructured information on intranets
and extranets via a consistent, customizable and scalable
user interface (standard browser)
- Tools for searching, creating, editing and publishing
documents as well as workflow functionality for all work
processes
- Communications channels for the exchange of information
and project group work as well as technologies designed
to "find-the-expert"
- Integration of business applications through corresponding
interfaces
- Central assignment of user-specific access privileges
for all data and applications
According to the Delphi Group, enterprises can create more
time and accelerate business processes with the help of the
HIP, because it is no longer necessary for users to switch
between any number of different applications and data sources.
Based completely on standard Internet technologies, the portal
is built on the Hyperwave Information Server and is the multiple
award-winning solution for complex document and knowledge
management on intranets and extranets.
Flexible cockpit solution
The control center for the portal "instruments" is the user
interface in modular design. It consists of different windows,
the tracks, whose contents can be adapted to meet specific
user needs. Elements of the personal desktop include, for
example, frequently used documents, groupware functions (Lotus
Notes/Microsoft Exchange), internal and external messaging
sources or discussion forums/chat. It is also possible to
use interfaces to integrate such standard applications as
SAP R3 or business intelligence systems designed to search
through structured and unstructured data sources such as databases,
servers or the Internet.
Access to specific information
The portal offers a number of tools to allow users to access
specific information. In addition to the clearly structured
directory, these include search engines for searches in full
text, metadata (attributes) and XML tags as well as the applications
from Cognos and Autonomy (cf. separate press releases). Information
is supplied actively by "agents", stored search profiles which
regularly search the knowledge pool and inform the user of
relevant new material by email messaging or with a note on
the private "home page". In addition, there are "eyes" which
observe the status of subscription documents and issue a message
as soon as their contents change.
Effective knowledge transfer
To generate knowledge from information, it is necessary to
put the information into context. The Hyperwave eKnowledge Portal does just that by using dynamic, bi-directional links.
Automatic link management guarantees link integrity when the
documents are renamed, moved or deleted and puts an end to
user frustration with "dead-end" navigation. At the same time,
the server hides links, and with them the contents, of documents
users are not authorized to see. The portal also includes
a number of communication channels to encourage workers to
share their knowledge. In addition to Email, there are discussion
forums, chat groups and electronic annotations, a function
which allows users to write questions and comments on the
contents of a document wherever they arise.
Easy publishing
The Hyperwave eKnowledge Portal permits authorized users
to publish information themselves on the intranet, either
directly from applications (e.g. Microsoft Office), via the
integrated WYSIWYG-HTML editor or by Drag and Drop. The portal
directory structure, the virtual folders, are integrated in
the MS-Explorer and allow intuitive and rapid document import
and export - more than 250 file formats are supported. Version
control and definable document release processes ensure that
the documents are filed correctly according to the individual
company guidelines. To keep administrative requirements to
a minimum, the Hyperwave Information Server automatically
enters the documents in the full-text index, extracts the
metadata and hyperlinks and stores this information separately
from the contents as individual objects in the database.
Security for sensitive data
The Hyperwave eKnowledge Portal provides access to all of
the structured and unstructured data on the intranet. However,
a hierarchical system of access rights makes it possible to
guarantee the security of sensitive data. Access rights can
be assigned to a collection, a document, a link or even to
a single paragraph in a document. To protect the database
against rank growth, users are assigned a security level,
which gives them either read-only access or the right to modify
documents and delete links as well. A central user and rights
directory allows convenient administration, whereby the access
rights of individual users or whole groups can be assigned
at the click of the mouse. The access rights also customize
user access to the corporate knowledge base - information
sources and applications the user doesn't need do not even
appear in his/her interface. This considerably reduces information
search time and accelerates business processes.
