Hyperwave makes knowledge management mobile with WAP
The Hyperwave eKnowledge Portal is now also accessible by
mobile phone
February 10, 2000
The Hyperwave eKnowledge Portal now supports wireless access
to corporate knowledge on the intranet or extranet. The central
functions of the portal can be used with a WAP-enabled mobile
phone, such as the Nokia 7110. This includes navigating through
the directory structure of the Hyperwave Information Server,
reading HTML documents and Emails, retrieving employee contact
data or accessing external news sources. In addition, user
administration and automatic link management on the server
also function with WAP. As a result, every user has individual
access to the database and the integrity of the links ensures
that expensive mobile communications connections are used
as efficiently as possible.
Content management by mobile phone
What makes the Hyperwave eKnowledge Portal so easily adaptable
to WAP technology is the separation of the information into
content and layout. In contrast to WAP converters, the server
is able to speak native WAP; in other words, it provides the
same information automatically in a different form: on the
computer the user gets formatted text and graphics, on the
road only text is supplied. The data is transmitted automatically
in the WAP format by a corresponding server interface, which
can be configured individually and allows special layout programming
for content output on a mobile phone display or any other
mobile terminal device.
Access to specific information
The modular design of the portal interface in individual
windows or "tracks" optimizes access to information on the
intranet even further. They divide intranet contents into
such categories as personal documents, Emails, addresses,
current enterprise news or bookmarks for sources on the Internet
or WAP services. On the road, the user can access the "tracks"
directly on a WAP-enabled mobile phone, making the information
required available quickly. Bandwidth use can be optimized
even further by configuring a separate interface consisting
exclusively of tracks with WAP contents in addition to the
portal interface for the desktop.
Frontrunner in technology
The Hyperwave Information Server is already able to actively
transfer information from the Hyperwave eKnowledge Portal
to the mobile phone. All that is standing in the way of this
push technology are the carrier gateways, a hurdle that the
upcoming WAP version will overcome. As a member of the WAP
Forum and a partner of leading enterprises in the communications
and IT industry, Hyperwave will continue to be actively involved
in improving the use the WAP devices on the intranet.
