Hyperwave takes Knowledge Management mobile
November 02, 2000
The ability to access information at any time and from any location
is a key requirement of staff in today's companies. Leading this
trend is Hyperwave, a supplier of knowledge and content management
information portals, which has now added wireless access to its
Hyperwave eKnowledge Portal.
WAP tracks (syndicated portal components) and a WAP framework have
been added to enable users to access the Hyperwave eKnowledge Portal
through a WAP-enabled mobile phone or other device, creating true
anytime, anyplace knowledge management.
The Hyperwave eKnowledge Portal already allows users to create
their own individual content and knowledge databases using individual
windows or 'tracks'. These tracks divide intranet contents into
such categories as personal documents, Emails, addresses, current
enterprise news or useful bookmarks for sources on the Internet.
These are now available in WAP enabled form, giving device independent
access to portal contents.
The following WAP enabled tracks are currently available free of
charge from http://tracks.hyperwave.com:
- "POP or Send mail track": enables the transfer of
e-mails.
- "People finder": allows access to staff addresses
stored directly on the portal server or in an LDAP directory.
- "News track": delivers current fast breaking news
from all over the world.
- "Dictionary track": serves as a foreign language
translator.
- "Stock track": provides information on the movement
of individual international stocks and markets.
Access to tracks via WAP is enabled by the Hyperwave Information
Server, which contains all the information available through the
Hyperwave eKnowledge Portal.
In contrast to WAP converters, the Hyperwave Information Server
is able to speak native WML, providing the same information automatically
in a different form according to the viewing medium - on a PC, the
user gets formatted text and graphics, but for mobile access, only
text is supplied. The data is transmitted automatically into the
WML format by a corresponding server interface, which can be configured
individually and allows special layout programming for content output
on a mobile phone display or any other mobile terminal device.
Other functions of the Hyperwave Information Server are also available
on WAP enabled devices, including automatic hyperlink management,
which improves the quality of information provided to the user and
eliminates the time taken checking for broken links. This allows
mobile telephone bandwidths, which remain narrow, to be used efficiently.
The portal can now not only be used for successful information management,
but it also enables the creation of efficient M-commerce applications.
"The ultimate ambition of knowledge management is to enable
every member of staff to have targeted access to the company's knowledge
at any time, wherever they are. Hyperwave already meets this requirement
on the Intranet, Extranet and Internet. WAP tracks represent a significant
step towards achieving this goal for mobile information management",
explains Dr. Frank Kappe, CTO and board member of Hyperwave AG.
