More "Info Thrust" for Eurofighter
New Intranet for EADS Deutschland GmbH built on Hyperwave
Information Server
December 01, 2000
Hyperwave's knowledge and content management software has provided
the foundation for a new Intranet developed for one of the lead
companies behind the development of the Eurofighter. The Military
Aircraft division of EADS Deutschland GmbH, a subsidiary of the
European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS), uses Hyperwave's
Information Server software to provide its 5,700 employees with
access to documents and information and co-operative project groups
independent of time and geography.
Replacing a previous standalone solution, Hyperwave's software
is helping meet EADS Deutschland's requirements for secure, robust
and cost effective content management of its Intranet.
Security for Sensitive Data
Security was one of the key requirements of the application. The
confidential nature of some of the information held on the intranet
means that access to some documents needs to be restricted to selected
users. "The Military Aircraft division's Intranet contains
documents that have to be kept under lock-and-key at the request
of the client," explains Dagmar Schult, assistant project
leader at EADS Deutschland GmbH. "One of the most important
demands placed on the new solution was the capability to make information
available to certain employees only,"
This requirement is met by the Hyperwave Information Server's authorisation
system, which allows user privileges to be set specifying which
documents can be accessed by selected individuals only. These rights
can also be assigned to hyperlinks so that each employee is given
a customised view of content on the Intranet whilst the rest remains
hidden.
The ability of Hyperwave's software to restrict access to certain
information has enabled EADS Deutschland's Intranet to provide a
public area with general company information, as well as closed
user groups with specialised information. Management of content
is decentralised and handled by employees in the various departments,
groups, and project teams at different locations.
Less Work for the Webmaster
Adding new information to the previous Intranet could only be
done by specified webmasters, resulting in bottlenecks. "The
old Intranet consisted of several servers distributed among different
locations. To publish documents on the Intranet, employees had to
initially find the administrators in charge and wait for them to
put the documents on the Intranet," says Schult. "This
process was time-consuming, especially for managing information
subject to frequent change. This job is now handled by individual
employees, considerably speeding up time to publication."
Hyperwave's software allows virtually every user to make the day's
current information and documents available to colleagues on the
Intranet in the original formats - without special HTML programming
knowledge. To avoid uncontrolled growth of the system, the publication
rights, however, are limited to selected employees. An integrated
full-text browser from Verity provides fast access to information.
Expansion in planning
The benefits brought by Hyperwave's software have convinced EADS
Deutschland GmbH to expand its Intranet into an information portal,
emphasising personalisation. Instead of a standardised user interface,
each employee will have a personal start page for direct access
to certain sources of information. An eLearning system will be integrated
into the Intranet to provide employees with special continuing education
courses.
